Every bed plan starts with the same question, whether you are gardening for the first time or already planning next year: what do I actually want to grow?
And this is the nicest question in garden planning, because it is only about what you would like. Just put those plants on your wishlist, without worrying about beds, rows or spacing yet. That comes later.
And if you have been at it for a while, the list is even less work, because you can copy it over from last year with one click. You cross out what didn’t work and add what you want to try this time. When you change the year at the top, you always see the wishlist for that year.
When you start planning, the list helps you in two ways. You keep track of which of your plants are already in the beds and which are still missing. And it works as a filter in the plant list, so you don’t have to scroll through the whole selection every time.
If you use the Garden Fairy, the wishlist matters a lot. The better you keep it, the more precisely the fairy plans your beds, because then she knows which plants you want.
How the page is set up
The wishlist has its own entry in the main menu, between Beds and Tasks. You can spot it by the heart icon. The page is split in two:
- Left: Your wishlist with the plants you have already added.
- Right: The plant list with all available plants and the usual filters. Only plants that are not on your wishlist yet show up here. That way you never add a plant twice.
On narrow screens like a phone there is no room for two columns. Instead you get two tabs at the top to switch between: “Wishlist” and “Plants”.
Adding and removing plants
To add a plant, search or filter for it in the plant list on the right and tap the left arrow in its row (Add to wishlist). The plant moves over to your wishlist on the left and disappears from the plant list on the right.
To take a plant off the wishlist again, tap the bin icon in the list on the left (Remove from wishlist).
Two versions: simple or with quantity
Depending on how precisely you want to plan, the wishlist comes in two versions. You switch between them with the toggle at the top of the page.
- Simple: You just collect the plants you want, without any quantity.
- With quantity: For each plant you also say how many you want to grow. Every plant then has an input field for the quantity you need, and below it you see how many are already in your beds, for example “10 of 20 planned”.
grove works out how many are already planned from your beds. You don’t have to keep that up to date yourself. Change something in a bed and the number updates on its own.
Switching between the versions doesn’t lose anything you entered. The simple version just doesn’t ask for quantities. Switch back and they are there again.
This also affects the Garden Fairy: with “With quantity” she keeps planting until the quantity is reached. With “Simple” she is happy once the plant has a spot somewhere in the garden.
Copying the wishlist from last year
If your wishlist for the current year is still empty, grove offers you the Copy wishlist from last year button. One click and last year’s plants are in this year’s list.
From there you adjust it to the new year. Whatever didn’t taste good or caused trouble, you throw out. Whatever you want to try, you add. In the version with quantities you can correct the amounts as well.
How wishlist plants are marked when planting
The wishlist doesn’t stay on its own page. When you plant a bed, you recognise your wishlist plants right in the plant selection: they have a small heart icon in the bottom right of the plant image, and the frame around the image is coloured instead of the usual green. So you can see at a glance which of the plants shown are on your list.
In the With quantity version these plants also show how many you have planned already, for example “10 of 20 planned”.
Filtering by wishlist status
In the filter dialog of the plant list you can narrow the plants down by their wishlist status:
- On the wishlist: All plants that are on your wishlist.
- On the wishlist, not planned: The plants on your wishlist that you haven’t planned anything for yet. This is the filter you work through your list with.
- On the wishlist, not all planned: The plants you haven’t yet planned the full quantity for. This option only exists in the With quantity version.
- Not on the wishlist: All plants that are not on your wishlist.
Quick filters
Most of the time you don’t even need to open the filter dialog. Above the plant list, grove offers matching quick filters as clickable suggestions under Suggested filters.
If you have a wishlist, those suggestions come first: “All” and “Not planned”, plus “Not all planned” in the version with quantities. One click sets the filter. As soon as a wishlist filter is active, grove hides the remaining wishlist suggestions.
