I’ve been working on the next version of Grove for a few months now. My task list kept collecting things I really liked but couldn’t tie to one big topic, the way the free beds or the native apps were. So I gathered it all under the working title “Magic”.
For one of the biggest new features, the Garden Fairy, I had to dig deep into the plant data again. That meant I didn’t see the new version myself for a month or two. When I opened it up again the other day, I thought: “Really magic! This finally needs to go out!”
I want to release version 2 the week after next, so the week of 21/09/2026. Here’s a preview of what’s coming.
Garden Fairy
- She fills empty spots in the bed, plans preceding and following crops or fills a whole bed.
- Takes companion planting, crop rotation, plant spacing and planting times into account.
- For vegetables and green manure.
- For a single bed, selected beds or your whole garden.
- She creates proposals that you can change, accept or discard.
Wishlist
- Put together a list of the plants you want to grow.
- The number of plants already planned is counted and shown.
- Filter plants by your wishlist and by what you have not planned yet.
Garden Plan and Bed Overview
- The beds can be put together into a graphical garden plan.
- In the existing overview every bed gets a preview image.
- You can set the order of the beds in the list yourself.
Bed Plan
- Free beds can now have individual shapes, for example raised beds in a U shape.
- Changes to one planting can be applied to all plantings of that plant in the bed.
- Bed printout: short plant profiles with the most important information about the plants in the bed.
- The ‘Edit bed’ dialog lets you delete all plantings of a bed at once.
- Free bed: you can now also set the size and position of a planting using input fields.
- Free bed: you can edit a planting by clicking the plant in the month selection.
- The bed plan is even faster. It was never slow, but on older devices every optimisation helps.
Plants and Plant Knowledge
- Perennial plants: plants that stay in the same spot for several years.
- New plant data: main crop/companion crop, green manure properties and frost resistance.
- Cross tables for companion planting and crop rotation: well-known analogue formats, implemented in a modern way. You open them from the plant list.
- Crop rotation warnings for row companion planting according to Gertrud Franck and Familie Langerhorst.
- Planting times display: in the details of a plant you can switch to the single view.
- Planting times display: move the mouse or your finger over the planting times to see sowing and harvest dates.
Filters
- Smart filters: in the plant list of the beds grove suggests matching filters.
- New filters for main crop/companion crop according to Schwester C. Weinrich.
- New filter ‘Good predecessors’.
- New filters for the wishlist.
Harvest Preview
- Better scrolling on small screens: months and categories stay visible.
- The beds where the plants grow can be opened directly.
Tasks
- Tasks can now be printed as a list.
- The filters are kept when you open a bed in between.
- You can filter for tasks without a bed.
- You can now move tasks from one week to another via drag & drop.
- You can also move all open tasks of a week via drag & drop.
App and Account
- Offline reading mode within the app.
- Sign in with Apple and Google.
- The start of the year change now shows more information.
Changed Calculations
- The harvest period is now calculated from more data (culture duration and standing duration per planting time). The results can differ from the previous ones.
- The distance calculation for predecessors and successors uses new values and no longer depends on the size of the plant.
